7 NEW HISTORICAL FICTIONS FOR FALL
Who would have thought we’d still be in quarantine 7 months on?! I certainly didn’t. But Fall, my power season, has come round once again and even though all my time is spent in doors now, I am ready to get cozy!
Not only are there some really fun books that I’m looking forward to reading, but I randomly had an idea for a novel that I’m very excited to get started writing. All I’m going to tell you about it now is that it will be a Victorian romance novel with lots of science and adventure. Maybe one day it can join the other books on my yearly list and you’ll read it. For now though, here’s what I can’t wait to read:
7. The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Horrow
Its 1893 and the witches are taking things to the ballot box! This book promises witches AND suffragettes. Two of my favorite things. I didn’t like the author’s first book, The 10-Thousand Doors of January, but this one sounds totally up my alley. Out October 13.
6. The Glorious Guinness Girls by Emily Hourican
I had a lot of fun diving into Irish History Month for Storical and this book is about the three granddaughters of the man who founded Guinness, yes, beer Guinness! These three girls were society darlings growing up and getting into trouble amidst the backdrop of the Roaring 20s and Ireland’s War of Independence. Can’t wait to give this a read. Out September 17.
5. A Most English Princess by Clare McHugh
This book is about Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter Vicky. A few years back, I listened to Stephen Fry’s podcast, Victorian Secrets, and there was a whole episode that talked about Kaiser Wilhelm’s weird relationship with his mother. Vicky was his mother! Then, in January of this past year before the world went nuts, I did an episode of Storical diving in to how basically all the major players of World War I were grandchildren to Queen Victoria. I went down lots of rabbit holes and now I’m excited for a book entirely from Vicky’s point of view. Out September 22.
4. Fair as a Star by Mimi Matthews
A few years ago on this very blog I told you that I don’t like romance novels. Well that was before I discovered the wonderful world of Regency Romance novels which are like terrible retellings of Pride and Prejudice, but reader, they are each like warm hugs. There are no stakes and everyone just lives happily ever after at the end, which I’m sorry but with a pandemic and cancer, I think I am entitled to some easy reading! Mimi Matthews is my favorite author in this genre and in the last year I’ve listened to most of her books on audio. This latest one is her first set in the Victorian Era so I will read it for…research. Out July 7.
3. The Orphan of Cemetery Hill by Hester Fox
sPoOoOkY book for October! This one is about a girl in 1840s Boston who can speak to the dead. I’ve been toiling on a book for years about a girl who has the same ability so definitely excited to get inspired and see how another author writes it. Plus, I only want ghosts in October. Out September 15.
2. The Eyes of the Queen by Oliver Clements
THIS BOOK IS ABOUT JOHN DEE! I HAVE A PERFUME INSPIRED BY JOHN DEE! Who is John Dee you ask? Oh just the occultist, alchemist, astrologer, and mathematician for Queen Elizabeth I. Out October 27.
1. Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman
ANOTHER PRACTICAL MAGIC PREQUEL! I loved The Rules of Magic. Maybe even more than Practical Magic. And this new prequel is about Maria Owens, the matriarch of the Owens bloodline. Omg I cannot wait for this. Out October 6.
Anything coming out soon that you’re excited about? Don’t forget to join our online book club, Potions and Paperbacks with Immortal Perfumes. Should we read one of these this Fall?!
