SMELL LIKE MARIE ANTOINETTE
Marie Antoinette, queen of fashion, queen of our hearts. In the early years of her reign, Marie Antoinette was a popular, beautiful queen who set every standard of fashion. She was a trendsetter in every sense of the word, including when it came to perfume. In Marie’s day, expensive musky scents with ingredients like civet were all the rage. She preferred clean florals, however. To get a perfume that was to her liking, she employed a perfumer named Jean-Louis Fargeon to create her signature scent.
The exact recipe is lost to history but we do know some of the ingredients she liked. Below is a how-to guide to make your own Marie Antoinette inspired perfume. It’s not quite the same as the one made by Immortal Perfumes™ which you can find below as well. You’ll smell amazing, just hang on to your head.
Ingredients & Materials
Sandalwood
Rose
Bergamot
Jasmine
Jojoba oil
5ml roll on bottle (if you have sensitive skin and want to dilute the perfume more, use a larger bottle and follow the same recipe)
Pipettes (if using plastic, get one pipette per oil)
Measuring cup (optional)
Recipe
Use a pipette to squeeze out the following:
10 drops sandalwood
7 drops bergamot
7 drops jasmine
5 drops rose
Let the oils sit for one week in a dark cabinet or box. Fill the rest of the container with jojoba, apply the rollerball and cap. The perfume is ready to wear but for best results let it sit for a full month before applying.
Where to Buy Ingredients
The best place to start is always the witchy store in your town or city. You know the one I’m talking about. The one that smells like incense and sells crystals. They usually will have all of these oils and will probably have bottles and pipettes as well. If you don’t have access to one, below are some oil and packaging stores I love.
A note about fragrance vs. essential oils. People have strong feelings about this but from a perfumer perspective, I can tell you with full confidence both are fine. Fragrance oils are synthetic, but so long as you buy from a reputable company such as the ones mentioned below, you will get high quality oils that are free of parabens and phthalates. While many believe that natural is always better, the fact is that some essential oils can be harmful, can come from animals, can cause irritation, or in the case of rose, can be prohibitively expensive. That is why synthetics were originally created and are used almost across the board in the EU. So do what is best for you and your budget knowing that all options are ok!
You will most likely need to use a rose oil that has either been previously diluted or is a fragrance oil.
Whole Foods - they have all of these oils, however, some of them may be diluted already. That’s completely fine, just be aware it might not come out as strong.
Trader Joe’s - great, inexpensive bottles of Jojoba. Whatever you don’t use is great for moisturizing your skin!
Brambleberry - great oils and packaging
Zenith Supplies - great oils and packaging as well
Accessories for Fragrances - packaging
